Description: [show]

Two very thin layers of luminously glorious silk are joined at the selvages (so it's like getting twice as much fabric). Individually they're almost translucent, and layered together the fabric is just opaque enough for modesty while still being fascinatingly lustrous.

Perfect for scarves, skirts, dresses, lingerie, wedding dresses, blissful curtains, and so much more. As a single layer I'd love to see this used as a veil, too. Undyed -- what you see is the natural color of the beautiful silk threads.

Handwoven on antique looms in a small town in India, where members of a women's cooperative create this beautiful fabric as part of their way to support their families and educate their children.

Note that unless your swatch comes from the selvage, it will seem like two unconnected pieces of fabric. That's because the two layers are only attached at the selvages. Use this to your advantage when sewing -- consider the difference between hemming the two layers individually or together when making a skirt or shirt sleeves, for example. Note that this is a natural, hand-loomed fabric and frequent irregularities (which some less-imaginative people might call flaws) are to be expected. Indeed, they're part of the charm.

I really can't explain how incredibly thin this fabric is -- it makes our Amity Silk seem quite substantial! Note that it weighs less than 2 ounces per linear yard for both layers, which still amazes me. The loose weave adds visual interest, making the fabric look almost like it is flowing even when it's standing still.

Do be aware that each roll of this fabric we receive tends to differ from the last, so please request a swatch.
